Composite windows are made of a hybrid mixture, which results from the combination of wood fibers (wood waste) and various plastics. So, WPC combines the qualities of 2 types of materials, although, even with 70% wood in the composition, the new material’s properties are more similar to plastic.
The main advantages of composite windows include:
- increased mechanical resistance to moisture, rot, and insects
- no risk of cracks
- increased fire resistance (these products are flame retardant)
- lightweight (these windows are lighter than wood windows)
- ease of maintenance and cleaning
On the other hand, there are also some cons related to composite windows. WPC is not exactly wood, so it does not have the beauty and warmth of natural wood. Like any plastic, it will age sooner or later and start losing some of its properties. WPC behaves like a thermoplastic material that becomes soft at high temperatures. Finally, composite windows are not as easy to recycle as traditional wood windows.
