Summer comes with high temperatures that can affect our comfort not only outside, but in our homes, too. Keeping temperatures comfortably cool in our rooms can be costly, too – HVAC systems are great to have, but they consume lots of energy that reflect in home energy bills. Fortunately, we can use our windows to reduce the heat that penetrates our buildings – here is how:

  • Use drapes – the thick, dense textiles that drapes are made from are very efficient for keeping the heat out. Keep your windows open during the night, when the air is fresher, and draw your drapes on your closed windows early in the morning, to keep the cool air inside during the day;
  • Use blinds, shades or shutters – these items work the same way as drapes, but they are even more efficient – while drapes can reduce the amount of heat entering your building by around 30%, blinds, shades or shutters can keep out about 40% of the heat;
  • Apply films on your windows – low-emissivity films are great, modern solutions that increase the energy-efficiency of your windows. These coatings are practically metal coatings installed on the outermost surface of the panes and that block solar radiation. Many modern windows come factory-equipped with e-coating, but the films can also be purchased separately and applied by the homeowners.  With really old windows look at Denver window replacement company for help.
