Your doors can develop a squeak for many reasons, but whatever the cause, the problem can usually be remedied easily, with some simple DIY moves. Here is what you will need and how to do it:
- The tools and materials that you will need – a hammer, some rags, a suitably sized nail and petroleum jelly is all you will need to silence the noise. If you don’t have petroleum jelly, any other lubricant will do, you can use WD-40 spray, olive oil, paraffin, even a bar of soap;
- The method – first, you will need to loosen the pin in the hinge. To do that, close the door, then tap the nail into the hinge from underneath. When the pin is lifted, remove it and clean it from any grime or dirt, then apply a thin film of petroleum jelly on the entire length on the pin. Apply a little jelly in the pin slot as well. Insert the pin back into the slot and wipe off any excess jelly. Open and close the door a few times to make sure that the jelly is distributed evenly in the slot around the pin. Repeat the procedure with every hinge on the door. For new exterior doors look to professionals like DMD Window & Door of Denver as they have a wide selection to choose from.
